The day is finally here when it takes two TV stations to get the ratings once gotten by one station. (I think radio is currently at a 5:1 ratio.) The killer has been and always will be programming costs. That will still be true when the entire staff consists of 1 part time janitor.
As usual, our luncheon will be at Sinbad's just south of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero near the foot of Mission St. We meet at 11:30 and are seated at 12:30. To make reservations call Paul Black at 925-827-9511 and leave a message on his machine.
The speaker for our May meeting revealed that Z just delivered one of their measurement sets to Sutro Tower. So if you see a white truck with the upper end of a very large swizzle stick on top, it's got to be Gene or Ray or one of the Sutro gang out for a drive. Z will soon have their own measurement quality stand alone 8VSB receiver.
Paul Marks is trying to arrange for Zenith to do one of their 8VSB seminars in San Francisco. We need a location with a large conference room or studio. Zenith travels with many many cases of hi-tech show and tell.
One major weight is the box containing the spiral bound class notes. I suggested they might want to move all that to a CD. In my old office I had many spiral note sets and I could never find the right one.
I had my arm twisted and will be the SMPTE chair for the coming year. I think the major impact for chapter 40 is that I will propose joint sponsorship of some programs. That will put us back into evening meetings a few times a year.
SBE's luncheon programs at the same location each month have been much easier to manage than meetings the wander around the map. SBE did that for a long time and it wore out several sets of officers. I may need some help with the certification program so let me know if you can be available to proctor tests.
I'll have details next month. The Zenith seminar will be in Reno in August in conjunction with an educational TV conference.

I've talked to a number of people who haven't even begun to consider a long term strategy for their financial well being, or worse, who've come into some money and are ripe to be picked.
The first investment everyone should make is in their knowledge of investing. That's accomplished by reading the business section in the newspaper, subscribing to investment publications, reading books on the subject, and going to lectures and seminars. I give high marks to the free publications available from Vanguard.com. They are very clearly written and easy to understand.
Many employers have 401K plans that invest money pretax and reduce reportable earnings for tax purposes. You never see the money so the investment is painless. Given the short lifetime of companies and the likelihood you will change employers, the key advantage of the 401K is that you can move it from employer to employer.
